I started using gimp but I dont really like it for pixel art I might have to just get used to it though
Well it does seem like a good program, but not made for pixel art specifically. With the above for example you're still getting transparent edges, and working with larger brushes, which wouldn't really be considered pixel art in the traditional sense. You're not working with individual pixels there.
Aesprite seems like a popular one for pixels but not sure if that ones free. Otherwise plenty of online ones like:

...but of course, functionality's a little limited in comparison. :) In part a part of the art, but they're definitely not the most efficient to use. You can probably adjust settings to work on a per-pixel basis with GIMP too.
